Berkeley Springs Visitor Center
Our local Visitors Bureau has information about upcoming events and businesses. A great web site to start your trip planning. The Visitor Center is just a 5 minute walk from the Mendenhall 1884 Inn at 127 Fairfax Street.
Berkeley Springs State Park holds the unique distinction as the oldest and smallest state park in the United States. Perfectly situated in the center of town and just a short walk from the Mendenhall 1884, this family friendly park offers visitors access to the famous healing powers of the mineral springs that flow at a constant temperature of 74.3 degrees. Surround yourself in the beauty of the parks colorful gardens, lush green lawns and magnificent shade trees while enjoying a picnic lunch. The park includes a nostalgic bandstand, 18th century millstone, views of the Suit Castle and George Washington’s Bath Tub – a favorite spot with parents and children for generations. A free summer time concert series featuring local artists is also scheduled every Saturday afternoon in July and August. This hidden gem of Americana is just one block from the Mendenhall 1884 Inn!
Berkeley Springs State Park Old Roman Spa
The park’s Old Roman and Main bathhouses offer a wide selection of spa services, including massages, saunas, baths and showers. The Roman Baths housed on the ground floor of this building are open to the public daily, year round from 10am-5pm. Naturally warm, mineral waters coming from the main springs behind the building are heated to 102° and fill nine 5’x 9′ and 4′ deep tiled swimming baths in private rooms. Operated since the 1920s by the State of West Virginia, the baths were refurbished in 1995. The baths may be rented by the half hour by an individual or couple. The buildings and baths were renovated in 2020 with historic tiles, a handicapped accessible bath and a transparent covering added so the springs feeding the Roman Baths can be viewed. The Cacapon State Park is located just 10 miles south of the historic and charming town of Berkeley Springs. In addition to its award-winning Robert Trent Jones Sr. designed golf course, Cacapon offers a variety of activities sure to please any outdoor enthusiast. Spend your day kayaking or paddle boarding on the lake, mountain biking, wobble clay shooting, horseback riding, fishing, lake swimming or hiking 23 miles of wooded trails. During your visit, you don’t want to miss the sweeping views from the observation deck high on the top of Cacapon Mountain. Stunning views of West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania stretch across the horizon. Just a 10 minute drive from the Mendenhall 1884 Inn on US-522 West.
National Geographic Magazine rates this breathtaking view as one of America’s Outstanding Beauty Spots. Prospect Overlook also called Panoramic Overlook is located on Route 9, approximately 3 miles west of historic Berkeley Springs and just a short drive from the Mendenhall 1884 Inn. The Overlook offers a safe roadside pull-off and spectacular views of Pennsylvania, Maryland and West Virginia as well as the Potomac and Cacapon rivers. A “must see” stop for every guest.
Visit the Ice House Artist’s Co-op, a unique gallery showcasing and selling the work of more than 30 local and regional artists. Open weekends (and Fridays during the season) the Co-op Gallery is housed at the Ice House, home of the Morgan Arts Council and center for visual and performing arts of all media. The Morgan Arts Council’s formal gallery is adjacent to the Ice House Artists’ Co-op, in the same building, and keeps the same hours of operation. Give Purrs a Chance is a non-profit cat adoption center located in Berkeley Springs, WV. The cats are able to free roam in a two story Victorian house and socialize with visitors while they await adoption.
